Computerised axial tomography in traction injuries of the brachial plexus.

Severe traction injuries may damage the brachial plexus at any level from the spinal cord to the axillary outlet. Investigation aims to determine the level of the injury for each of the nerves, trunks or cords, with particular reference to obtaining firm evidence of any intradural (pre-ganglionic) damage. We report the results of computerised axial tomography of the cervical spine in comparison...

Impact of computerised axial tomography of the management of posterior fossa tumours in childhood.

Computerised axial tomography (CAT) has profoundly altered the management of most children with posterior fossa tumours. Fifty such children were operated on from October 1973 to December 1975, 20 of whom were explored after investigation by CAT only. Most recent experience suggests that CAT need by the only investigation in the majority of children suspected of having an expanding lesion in th...

Diencephalic epilepsy in a patient with agenesis of the corpus callosum confirmed by computerised axial tomography.

A case of diencephalic epilepsy is described in whom stereotyped attacks of spontaneous hypothermia and diaphoresis occurred over a 20 year period. No abnormality of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis was found, and there was no evidence of an intracranial mass lesion. Pneumoencephalography and computerised axial tomography (EMI scan) demonstrated agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Computerised axial tomography and magnetic resonance scanning in the Tolosa-Hunt syndrome.

A 50-year-old Asian male presented with a left sixth nerve palsy, left temporal pain, and rapidly deteriorating visual acuity in the left eye. A high resolution CT scan and magnetic resonance scan showed a left retro-orbital enhancing lesion extending from the lateral margin of the cavernous sinus on to the greater wing of the sphenoid and into the left orbit. Arteriography was normal. On high ...

Computerised Tomography (CT) Scans

Conventional CT scan the scan is taken slice by slice and after each slice the scan stops and moves down to the next slice eg, from the top of the abdomen down to the pelvis. This requires patients to hold their breath to avoid movement artefact. Spiral/helical CT scan this is a continuous scan which is taken in a spiral fashion. It is a much quicker process and the scanned images are contiguous.
